about

I met Ahmed Meselhy Ragab in 2019 and we struck up a musical rapport. He is an accomplished musician who plays many instruments. The first time we played together, I asked him to bring his oud. Ahmed grew up in Cairo, Egypt and from the moment we first played together, we were able to generate musical ideas upon ideas. It was a new sound for me to be a part of, and we had an inner agreement on beginnings and endings and all the in between. At the onset of 2021, Lemon DeGeorge called me and suggested I record some music at his studio which is near my home, to have a creative project during the barren cultural time of early 2021. I thought about making this record with Ahmed. I invited the great saxophonist David Boyce to participate on soprano knowing of his improvisational skills and knowledge of kemetic modes. Lemon had a friend from Philadelphia in town, E.J. Simpson who is a fine bassist. He borrowed my El Capitan bass and played on two tracks. Lemon himself played on the last track, a harmonica through a bank of pedals. We sculpted these 10 tracks from the raw materials of our efforts and present it to you with love and respect. Pyramid Cities. Music by Dave Mihaly (tracks 8 and 9, BMI Dapami Music) , Ahmed Meselhy Ragab (tracks 7 and 10), John Abercrombie (track 6), Mihaly/ Ragab/ Boyce (tracks 1, 4, and 5), Mihaly, Ragab, Boyce, Simpson (tracks 2 and 3)
